This week’s #AdjunctChat is titled “Academy of the Oppressed.”
Much like the previous notable works that earned the words “… of the Oppressed,” this chat will be more about the now, the people who are oppressed in the present of the Academy—faculty, students, and others. The goal is to think, first, about what hurts now, second, about what we want the future to looks like, and third, about what we can do tomorrow, by ourselves if we have to, in order to make it to a future that we call ours.
Our chat questions for this week will be…
- What is happening now? Tell us, however directly or indirectly, about a trouble you’ve observed or heard about in the structure of the Academy that is personally familiar to you.
- What could the future look like? Tell us, however directly or indirectly, what you think a corrected, functional, and fair version of the troubles you/we have described might look like.
- What do we do to move ahead? Think back to #1, and tell us, however directly or indirectly, what you and we should, could, or would do to move from there to #2.
Other important questions to consider are as follows: Why is this the case? Why approach it in this way? What are the costs? Then again, this chat is less about analyzing what’s going on and more about what’s going on. Above all, let’s talk about the personal situations we have observed and not get lost in difficult-to-manage abstractions. That is, it may just be that what’s easy to imagine—since we’ve been trained to think and talk in (oppressive) abstractions—is what we most need to be suspicious of.
