What are you doing this year to keep your teaching fresh?

September is often considered back to school time, even for those of us who may teach odd schedules or all year long. Out with the old, and in with the new!

Have you taught the same classes before but want to do something new or different, even if it is just to maintain your own interests and passions (not to mention to meet the ever changing needs of our college-age or adult learners)? This #AdjunctChat may just be what you need to share what you are doing or try to pick up something new. Hey, even just chatting with other adjuncts at the beginning of September may just help us to not feel so . . . alone.

The chat will be led and facilitated by @JeffreyKeefer and will be guided by these questions:

Some of you may recall a recent #AdjunctChat we had the explored the experiences of adjunct, part-time, contingent, precarious, faculty in higher education –
Global Experiences of Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education. A number of us who chatted that day have remained in touch and shared ideas for expanding this.

How about a day-long #AdjunctChat, making it easier for people in various timezones to participate?

Seems a good idea, though like many things worth doing it requires lots of discussion for shared terms, scheduling, logistics, topics, and the like.

With this as the backdrop, let’s spend today’s time together discussing some issues that may be related to a different style of #AdjunctChat. Here are a few potential starters that our facilitator @jeffreykeefer will use:

Q1: What are your thoughts about trying a day-long #AdjunctChat?

Q2: What would be some of the benefits of this form of #AdjunctChat?

Adjuncts on the Dole: Eliminating the Shame of Applying for Public Assistance

Many adjunct and part-time higher education instructors struggle earning a living through teaching multiple courses, often at multiple universities, frequently barely making enough income to survive. Moreover, it is increasingly a situation where some are seeking public assistance just to survive. Does this resonate with your experiences? Want to challenge the stigma associated with all this? Want to chat?

Our discussion will focus on these questions:
