@Melissa_Venable @LitProfSuzHi Suz! Melissa here in SC – a cold and cloudy day, but good conditions for productivity 😉 #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:00
@LitProfSuz As a 1st yr grad stdnt, I needed help w/ wrtng. Read Silvia’s “How to Write a Lot” Changed how I viewed wrtng #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:01

@JeffreyKeefer @LitProfSuz I am here, joining #AdjunctChat from #nyc 3/4/2014 21:02

@LitProfSuz I took Silvia’s advise & formed an accountability wrtng group. Have since coached many ppl now through thesis/diss/articles #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:04
@JeffreyKeefer Some people find it useful to use Twubs or tchat.io to follow #AdjunctChat. I have recently been using @HootSuite for these Twitter chats. 3/4/2014 21:05

@LitProfSuz @manville71 Welcome Sarah – glad you joined. Add #adjunctchat to each tweet 3/4/2014 21:05
@manville71 #AdjunctChat my biggest obstacle to writing is divided attention. teach 4 classes take 2, plus life. I can’t get a block of time set aside 3/4/2014 21:05
@Melissa_Venable @LitProfSuz I have a writing partner as well – small group, but we keep each other motivated to keep moving forward #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:05
@JeffreyKeefer @Melissa_Venable Great to see you in #AdjunctChat again!! 3/4/2014 21:05
@Melissa_Venable @JeffreyKeefer Thanks, Jeffrey! Good to be here. Have had a packed schedule lately. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:06
@LitProfSuz I’ve also read Boice’s “Professors as Writers” to help in coaching. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:06
@JeffreyKeefer @LitProfSuz Whose advice did you follow? #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:06
@JeffreyKeefer @manville71 This is my experience, too! #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:06
@LitProfSuz Q1: To unmask the private agony of writing, what are the things that block you as a writer? #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:07
@manville71 #AdjunctChat Writing partner would be great. Other adjuncts are not viable–they are too much in transition as well. 3/4/2014 21:07
@JeffreyKeefer My challenge with #AcWri is that I work FT in educational project management, teach 2 classes, and do a bit of consulting #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:07
@fabianbanga @JeffreyKeefer @LitProfSuz i am here #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:07
@npmaven RT @LitProfSuz Q1: To unmask the private agony of writing, what are the things that block you as a writer? #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:07
@Melissa_Venable @manville71 Agreed! divided attention, time, distractions … all can affect focus on writing. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:07
@LitProfSuz @JeffreyKeefer Silvia recommends an accountability wrtng group. State goals, admit success & failure. Peer pressure. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:08
@npmaven Typical: time (for this work), energy, multiple demands on both. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:08

@npmaven Energy is huge, esp since “non-work” writing is confined to limited blocks of time – not prime, either, for me. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:09
@LitProfSuz @Melissa_Venable @manville71 Boice found that regular, small (30 min) amounts of wrtng is more productive than binging #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:09
@IshaiBarnoy A1: I’m usually blocked by other people’s expectations, especially people close to me. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:10
@fabianbanga @LitProfSuz I can only write under a lot of adrenaline and pressure #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:10
@IshaiBarnoy A1: It’s easiest for me to write to my students, because it seems they’re still figuring out their expectations. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:10

@LitProfSuz @IshaiBarnoy Ah, the inner and external critic! Not unusual. I think we all fear what others will think. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:11
@Melissa_Venable @LitProfSuz Interesting! I’m not sure how much I would accomplish in 30 mn. Spend that time recapping where I was when left off #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:11
@fabianbanga My dissertation: 3 month of procrastination and then wrote a chapter in two weeks. (then editing) #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:12
@npmaven My “prime” writing time: 5:15-6:15 a.m. Before work, sleeping puppy clear brain 🙂 Still, multiple demands on it. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:12
@LitProfSuz @fabianbanga Ah, you like the demands of a deadline. That is good to know about yourself. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:12
@Comprof1 @Melissa_Venable @LitProfSuz I’ve always had problem with daily writing also #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:13

@JeffreyKeefer RT @LitProfSuz: Q1: To unmask the private agony of writing, what are the things that block you as a writer? #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:13
@fabianbanga @LitProfSuz Very common in journalism #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:13
@IshaiBarnoy @fabianbanga @LitProfSuz Yes, me too. Somehow, the critic’s gone and “authenticity” is pointless then. Feels crappy, though. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:13
@npmaven As pracademic, I’m also torn: immediate access, interaction, sharing via blog vs. long-term academic writing projects #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:13
@manville71 #AdjunctChat for me the 30 minutes is a nonstarter. It’s just getting settled, where are my sources, what is my framework. 3/4/2014 21:14
@JeffreyKeefer Q1: My biggest block is having time AND then I try to get everything just right before I start, and thus never start #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:14

@Melissa_Venable +1 to @npmaven’s tip – early morning hours, before house and work get going, can be really productive for writing. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:15
@JeffreyKeefer @manville71 A1: I am very process oriented, so also like to get everything just right before I begin #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:16
@IshaiBarnoy @JeffreyKeefer Best way for me to find time, and avoid perfectionism, is to steal this time — find a really bad time to write. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:16
@Comprof1 @npmaven esp now trying to decide what will get me a position. I feel shattered #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:16
@JeffreyKeefer @npmaven What is a pracademic? #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:16
@npmaven @Melissa_Venable How I survive 🙂 Challenge is what I need to fit into that limited space (hint: too much). #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:16
@npmaven @JeffreyKeefer Pracademic=practitioner who also teaches #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:16
@LitProfSuz Boice states wrtng probs include-censoring self,fear of failure,perfectionism, procrastination,attitude toward wrtng & busyness #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:17
@Comprof1 @IshaiBarnoy @JeffreyKeefer can you explain?#adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:17
@IshaiBarnoy @Melissa_Venable @npmaven Not me. I’ve got my mornings plotted too carefully. Not even five minutes of writing time left. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:17
@JeffreyKeefer Today’s #AdjunctChat topic about #AcWri reminds me of some similar themes we had recently with @CamelsHammers 3/4/2014 21:17
@Melissa_Venable @npmaven 🙂 so many ideas and possible projects, so little time. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:17
@LitProfSuz So, now that we have revealed our problems, let’s talk about solutions. Q2) What works for you? #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:17
@fabianbanga @JeffreyKeefer had a column on Saturday newspaper: I wrote on Fridays (all am doing nothing and then vomit all in 30 m @ pm) #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:17
@npmaven @Comprof1 So sorry to hear that. My low bar: too old for tenure track position. Makes it easier(?) to look at other avenues. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:17
@npmaven @Melissa_Venable Epecially for Renaissance souls like us 😉 #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:18
@Comprof1 RT @Melissa_Venable: @npmaven 🙂 so many ideas and possible projects, so little time. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:18
@LitProfSuz @npmaven @Melissa_Venable Yes, we all need to figure out when our most productive time is. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:18
@npmaven RT @LitProfSuz So, now that we have revealed our problems, let’s talk about solutions. Q2) What works for you? #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:18
@JeffreyKeefer @LitProfSuz What sort of coaching do you do regarding #AcWri? #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:18
@IshaiBarnoy @Comprof1 @JeffreyKeefer I find a pocket of time when I could (so maybe should) be grading, for instance. Then I write instead. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:19
@npmaven A2) Definitely making the most of limited prime time. Also, looking for ways to repurpose. #adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:19
@manville71 #AdjunctChat what’s renumeration? 🙂 I do find a way to write everyday but none of it benefits me at my #adjunct position, only PhD prog 3/4/2014 21:19
@JeffreyKeefer @fabianbanga So, you wrote in a non-academic way as an aid in focusing? #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:19
@JeffreyKeefer RT @Comprof1: @IshaiBarnoy @JeffreyKeefer can you explain?#adjunctchat 3/4/2014 21:19
@Comprof1 @npmaven finding that myself so find spending more time blogging #adjunctchat so focus on prof writing 3/4/2014 21:19
@IshaiBarnoy @Comprof1 @JeffreyKeefer Usually these pockets aren’t longer than 45 minutes to an hour. I find I can’t do more at once anyway. #AdjunctChat 3/4/2014 21:19

  Adjuncts as Academic Writers

Have you been putting off writing the article that has been swimming in your head for the past  few months (or years)?  This #AdjunctChat will focus on strategies that can help jump start a specific writing project and identify habits that will sustain your writing over the long-haul! Our facilitator will be Suz @LitProfSuz.

Q2) What strategies/habits/resources have you found support productive writing?

Q3)  What are your immediate and long-term writing goals and how will you plan for success?

All are welcome to #AdjunctChat on Tuesday, March 4, from 4:00-5:00pm EST.
