#AdjunctChat November 11 ~ What is the Breadth of the Adjunct Community?

Twitter_ChatThe topic for the 30-minute #AdjunctChat on Tuesday, November 11 at 4:00pm EDT is:

What is the Breadth of the Adjunct Community?

How can we make the identity and breadth of the adjunct community more visible and understood? How do we empower our community to brainstorm possible solutions to common challenges?

Proposal to develop the #AdjunctChat WP site as a forum to manifest and find solutions to the full spectrum of challenges faced by the New Faculty Majority beyond labor issues: new pedagogies, sharing of best practices, collegiality, convenient access to professional development, faculty-student interaction, ownership of IP, scholarship, and much more. Are you in?

Is it possible for the (disaggregated) adjunct community to make heard its own strategies and proposals for solving some of our challenges–notably those that are not addressed through union representation? How do we do this, given concerns about job security and challenging time and resource limitations?

Let’s talk about this and see what ideas we can share on a 30-minute AdjunctChat – 4:00-4:30pm EDT – on Tuesday, November 11.

The chat will be led and facilitated by @JeffreyKeefer and @domienders will be guided by these questions:

Q1 What types of resources (e.g., sites, blogs, chats, conferences) do you find most valuable for connecting, learning and sharing with your colleagues? #AdjunctChat?

Q2 How do you find these resources, and how are they helpful? #AdjunctChat

Q3 Do you connect with colleagues around common academic subject areas, or other criteria as well? #AdjunctChat

All adjunct, contingent, part-time, visiting, casual, and non-tenure track instructors, along with their allies and friends in higher education, are welcome to #AdjunctChat! Even if you do not readily fit into the above, #AdjunctChat is open to all! The more perspectives, the better we all learn with and from one another.

If you cannot make the synchronous chat, please share your answers to the discussion questions any time during the day and tag with #AdjunctChat.

#AdjunctChat October 28 ~ Teaching with Metaphors #AdjunctChat

Twitter_ChatThe topic for the 30-minute #AdjunctChat on Tuesday, October 28 at 4:00pm EDT is:

Teaching with Metaphors

Do you teach tough topics, difficult ideas, or threshold concepts?

‘Threshold Concepts’ may be considered to be “akin to passing through a portal” or  “conceptual gateway” that opens up “previously inaccessible way[s] of thinking about something” (via Meyer & Land).

How do you do this, especially if you are an adjunct faculty member, often with challenging time and resource limitations? Perhaps you use visualization/scripting ‘what if’ scenarios as related strategies as well?

Let’s talk about this and see what ideas we can share on a 30-minute AdjunctChat – 4:00-4:30pm EDT – on Tuesday, October 28.

The chat will be led and facilitated by @JeffreyKeefer and will be guided by these questions:

Q1 What are some of the difficult topics you find your students struggle with? #AdjunctChat?

Q2 Do you use metaphors or visualizations to try to convey the topic to them?  #AdjunctChat

Q3 What strategies do you use to design and develop these? #AdjunctChat

All adjunct, contingent, part-time, visiting, casual, and non-tenure track instructors, along with their allies and friends in higher education, are welcome to #AdjunctChat! Even if you do not readily fit into the above, #AdjunctChat is open to all! The more perspectives, the better we all learn with and from one another.

Open #AdjunctChat Tues, Sept 23 – “How to be Heard?”

Let’s try something new for today’s #AdjunctChat, let’s have it open and us facilitated throughout the day, and see how the discussion occurs!

Want to see how we can have a conversation about raising adjunct issues to those who may not be open to them? How can we have a conversation, or raise awareness, of justice issues in a way that fosters discussion, or at least listening, by those who have other agenda?

“How can we raise issues of adjunct justice in alternate ways to be heard?”  #AdjunctChat

#AdjunctChat Sept 2 ~ “What are you doing this year to keep your teaching fresh?” (@JeffreyKeefer)

Twitter_ChatThe topic for the #AdjunctChat on Tuesday, September 2 at 4:00pm EDT is:

What are you doing this year to keep your teaching fresh?

September is often considered back to school time, even for those of us who may teach odd schedules or all year long. Out with the old, and in with the new!

Have you taught the same classes before but want to do something new or different, even if it is just to maintain your own interests and passions (not to mention to meet the ever changing needs of our college-age or adult learners)? This #AdjunctChat may just be what you need to share what you are doing or try to pick up something new. Hey, even just chatting with other adjuncts at the beginning of September may just help us to not feel so . . . alone.

The chat will be led and facilitated by @JeffreyKeefer and will be guided by these questions:

Q1 What are you teaching in the fall semester? #AdjunctChat

Q2 Have you taught this before? If so, how often? #AdjunctChat

Q3 Where do you look for new or different ideas to teach? #AdjunctChat

Q4 What new things are you hoping to try in your courses this semester? #AdjunctChat

Q5 How will you determine if they are successful? #AdjunctChat

All adjunct, contingent, part-time, visiting, casual, and non-tenure track instructors, along with their allies and friends in higher education, are welcome to #AdjunctChat on Tuesday, September 2, from 4:00-5:00pm EDT.
